Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There is something intensely delightful about a girl called Phoebe and a unicorn called Marigold Heavenly Nostrils and the two of them being best friends. Honestly, this review could just finish there but it won’t because then I would have omitted the best line and that is this: THIS BOOK IS GLORIOUS. Okay, no, I think we need more than that. IT REALLY IS. Okay, this is getting a bit chaotic, let’s try and be professional. YOU CAN BE PROFESSIONAL AND CHAOTIC IT IS VERY SATISFYING. Right. Yes. I seem to have invited a Usefully Prompting Additional Voice into this, let’s see how it goes.

NEW PARAGRAPH FOR DRAMA. Okay yes, I am eternally into that but pointing it out is not productive. NEW PARAGRAPH FOR NEW POINT OF VIEW? ONE MIGHT ALMOST CALL IT AN ACT OF CAESURA IF YOU WERE BEING FANCY BUT YOU ARE RUNNING LATE AND DON’T HAVE TIME FOR FANCY SO YOU REALLY NEED TO WRAP THIS ONE UP DON’T YOU?

Yes, alright, I am being fancy and I am also running late so I shall focus! Princess Marigold Nostrils (did you like that hefty shift back to the point?) is eternally fancy and eternally unashamed of it and this book is a delight because of that. I mean, how do you not love a unicorn who is trapped by the beauty of her own reflection? Who is so beautiful that she can look at herself for days? And then is bonked on the head by a stone thrown by a small girl and then decides to grant her a wish and the two of them become the best of friends? THAT WAS A RUNAWAY SENTENCE AND WELL YOU KNOW IT.

Look, it’s just a lovely book. It’s funny and it’s witty and it’s genuine and it’s so artful and it’s kind and I liked it an awful lot. I liked how realistic the friendship was (I LOVED HER PARENTS), I loved the dynamics between Phoebe and Marigold and I just thought it was excellent all round.

SO DID I.

Good. Good to know.
